Do you know WordPress offers an interesting feature called Must Use Plugins. As name suggests these are automatically enabled on your sites and do not show in your default list of plugins. They can only be removed from the site by deleting the files from a special directory called ‘mu-plugins’ which resides inside ‘wp-content’.
Interestingly, originally mu-plugins was implemented by WPMU (Multi-User) to allow site admins to easily manage multiple blog sites/farm. This feature was later replaced by Multi-site functionality, however mu-plugins was kept and reinterpreted as ‘Must Use’.
